First Day of Advent

Happy Advent!

December 1st and the first day of Advent means Christmas is coming!

Today I started my day by playing the organ for an Advent service and that included playing my favourite Advent hymn. In my eyes it isn’t Advent until I have either played or sung this hymn.

O come, O come, Emmanuel

O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here,
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan’s tyranny;
From depths of hell Thy people save,
And give them victory o’er the grave.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Dayspring, from on high,
And cheer us by Thy drawing nigh;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadows put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Key of David, come
And open wide our heav’nly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Adonai, Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai’s height,
In ancient times didst give the law
In cloud and majesty and awe.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

Translated by John Mason Neale (1861)

Today has also meant the Advent candle being lit, a couple of Christmas decorations going up and of course opening the first door on my Advent calendar. I also managed to get some Christmas reading in as well, which is always good!

Happy reading.

Christmas Book Haul

Hello!

Today I have had a wonderful day off, as I spent the morning reading and then went and spent the day in Birmingham book shopping and exploring the German Christmas Market.

I had a lot of fun in Waterstones and bought quite a few books and my husband also got some as well so the lady on the check out was quite surprised at the varied selection. I also had a lot of fun looking at the children’s section.

Here are my lovely books:-

TWAS.jpg

I bought this book because my best friend, nicknamed Tufty Seal highly recommends Adam Kay as a writer so I am really looking forward to reading this book.

AVGEC

I saw this today and just had to buy it as I absolutely love the film!

I must admit I got this because the cover was pretty, I know very shallow, but sometimes a pretty cover is all you need to buy a book.

I bought this because I loved the last book with Murder Christmas stories I hope this one does not disappoint.

Another book from the Christmas table at Waterstones. I hope it does not disappoint.

This book I got in the children’s section. I always get a version of The Nutcracker each year and this year I got this little one with a pop up surprise at the end!

I also got two very pretty decorations from the German Market.

Please drop me a comment if you have read any of the books.

Happy Reading.

Christmas Reading List: Update

I am getting so excited for Christmas that I have started reading my Christmas reading list! I will be adding to this list, as at the moment it is way too short. I always go to the German Market in Birmingham to do some Christmas shopping and I always spend a lot of time in Waterstones and that is usually when I get most of my Christmas books, so watch this space!

So here is the list in no particular order:-

The Night I Met Father Christmas by Ben Miller

Miss Marley by Vanessa Lafaye

A Very Murderous Christmas by various authors

A Very Country Christmas by Zara Stonely

A Literary Christmas: An Anthology

I have just started reading A Very Murderous Christmas and so far it is proving to be very good.

If you have any Christmas books to recommend to me please drop me a comment.

Christmas Reading List

Hello everyone!

I have started to think of my Christmas reading list. I usually begin my Christmas reading on the 1st December but this year I am very tempted to begin earlier because usually I am so busy during the month of December. Also I just want to get into the Christmas spirit!

The first on the list is a book recommended to me by my best friend, who sent me a very excited text yesterday telling me I just had to read it.

The Night I Met Father Christmas by Ben Miller

The second book will be a new copy of The Nutcracker which as you know I read every year and every year I get a new edition, the prettier the better.

So let the planning and Christmas book buying commence. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Happy reading.

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween Everyone!

I hope you all have a nice spooky book to read and celebrate halloween with.

I have chosen a little poem to celebrate.

In the Dark, Dark Wood

In a dark, dark wood there was a dark, dark house,

and in that dark, dark house there was a dark, dark room,

and in that dark, dark room there was a dark, dark cupboard,

and in that dark, dark cupboard there was a dark, dark shelf,

and on that dark, dark shelf there was a dark, dark box,

and in that dark, dark box there was a … GHOST!

Happy spooky reading!

Happy Easter

Happy Easter Everyone!

To celebrate Easter Day I have chosen another Easter poem, this one by Oscar Wilde.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day today.

Easter Day

The silver trumpets rang across the Dome:
The people knelt upon the ground with awe:
And borne upon the necks of men I saw,
Like some great God, the Holy Lord of Rome.

Priest-like, he wore a robe more white than foam,
And, king-like, swathed himself in royal red,
Three crowns of gold rose high upon his head:
In splendour and in light the Pope passed home.

My heart stole back across wide wastes of years
To One who wandered by a lonely sea,
And sought in vain for any place of rest:
‘Foxes have holes, and every bird its nest,
I, only I, must wander wearily,
And bruise my feet, and drink wine salt with tears.’

Oscar Wilde

Happy St Valentine’s Day!

Happy St Valentine’s Day Everyone!

I hope you all get some wonderful books off your Valentine’s.

I know it is not Friday but I just had to share this special poem about love with you all. I think Robert Burns sums it up perfectly.

A Red, Red Rose

My love is like a red, red rose

That’s newly sprung in June:

My love is like the melody

That’s sweetly played in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,

So deep in love am I:

And I will love thee still, my dear,

Till a’ the seas gang dry.

Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,

And the rocks melt wi’ the sun:

And I will love thee still my dear,

While the sands o’ life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only love,

And fare thee weel a while!

And I will come again, my love,

Thou’ it were ten thousand mile.

2019

Happy New Year Everyone!

So I have come up with a few goals for my reading, I’m afraid I’m not a very structured reader and I always just go with what my mood chooses at the time but this year I’m going to try to do better. So here are my goals:-

  1. I have set my Goodreads challenge to 65 only. This is mainly due to the fact I want to read some big books this year and so I do not think I will get the book numbers in.
  2. Read more classics. I used to read a lot of classics but this past year I have neglected them somewhat and I find myself missing them. I especially want to revisit Austen as she is one of my favourites.
  3. Try to complete the Book Bucket List poster my best friend gave me for Christmas. I’ve already read some of them so I’m hoping to tick off a few more. I’m also hoping this will make me read different books.
  4. Finally discover a new genre to enjoy. 2017 I discovered crime fiction and loved it. 2018 I discovered climate fiction. Hopefully I discover a new love this year.

I also have a few books on pre order that I am very excited to read this year. They are the following:-

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Sutton

The Man with no Face by Peter May

The Winter of the Witch by Kathrine Arden

The Night Olivia Fell by Christina McDonald

Romanov by Nadine Brandes.

Is anybody else looking forward to these books?

Wish me luck for my book goals.

Happy reading.

That’s a Wrap!

Well it is the last day of 2018! So what bookish things have I done in a year?

I set up this blog and have now been blogging for just over two months and I love it! I’m reading more books and blogs and discovering so many new books I would never have dreamed of reading before. Plus I’m talking about books on a daily basis, what is not to like?

I have read more books in a year than I have ever read before, 74 in total and I have enjoyed it immensely.

I have smashed my Goodreads reading challenge, my aim was only 60! Still undecided what 2019’s should be.

I have discovered some new authors I have never read before but definitely want to read more of:-

Neil Gaiman

Rosamunde Pilcher

Veronica Henry

Jeffrey Archer

Peter May

Mary Higgins Clark

My favourite books that I read in 2018:-

Coming Home by Rosamunde Pilcher

Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell

Watermelon Snow by William A Liggett

The Blackhouse by Peter May

My worst books of 2018:-

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes by Anita Loos

Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys

The Pearl by John Steinbeck

The Heart of a Dog by Mikhail Bulgakov

Newly discovered genres:-

Climate fiction

Favourite Poem:-

The Tyger by William Blake

Favourite Quote:-

“A classic is a book that has never finished saying what it has to say.”

Italo Calvino

I believe that is a wrap.

I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year’s Eve whether it is partying, reading, sleeping or whatever you prefer.

See you in 2019.
