This and That Thursday

Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone is well and having a good week so far. This is what I have been up to other than reading this week…

Ukulele

I have been practising my Ukulele quite a bit in the hope I can take my Grade 1 exam when exams are allowed. This is something I am really enjoying and it is wonderful learning a new skill.

Blogging

I’ve been thoroughly enjoying blogging and reading everyone’s blogs. I love to see what everyone is up to and what books people are reading.

Exercising

I’m keeping up with my exercise and really enjoying it. I’ve nearly finished season 2 of Criminal Minds whilst using my Elliptical machine. I really enjoy exercising but it has been a struggle in this heat.

Music

I’ve upgraded my teaching and recording set up so I no longer use my laptop speaker and inbuilt mic. This has already created a massive quality improvement in teaching and recording so I am hoping to have some more pieces up on Sound Cloud soon.

Baking

I made a new recipe called Whittingham Buttons, they have proved very yummy and I will be making them again as they were really easy to make.

Studying

This week’s studies have been fascinating  as I have been learning all about how the ancient Greeks and Romans dealt with child birth and child bearing, it has been rather gruesome at times. Now I have begun learning about the ancient sewage works.

So that about sums up my week so far. I hope everyone else is also having a good week, please drop me comment with what you have also been up to.

Happy Reading!

This and That Thursday

Hello!

I this post finds everyone well and safe.

This week has been rather busy, so much so that I haven’t managed to get my usual amount of reading in.

Teaching and Recording

I have been doing a bit more teaching online which has been lovely as I have been able to see my students again and to see what they have been up to. Due to teaching online though I can no longer play duets with my students because of the delay, this got me thinking and my solution was each week to email a duet to my students with the parts recorded separately so my students could play along. Getting the hang of recording on GarageBand has taken up quite a bit of my time. I recorded my first duet and put it on soundcloud. If you fancy a listen here is the link.

Jigsaw

I’ve started another jigsaw and I am thoroughly enjoying it because it is all dogs!

Future Learn

I’m still busy completing my course on Future Learn in preparation for my second year of my Masters. I have also spotted some more courses on there that I want to do next.

Baking

No baking really this week but we have made waffles! Waffles and Maple Syrup are the best!

So that is my week so far. I hope everyone else is also having a good week.

This and That Thursday

Hello!

Firstly, a big hello and welcome to my new followers! Thank you for following and I hope you will enjoy reading my blog.

So here is what I have been up to this week…

Exercise

I have been really getting into my exercising over the last few weeks and so I also treated myself to some new leggings. I love bright fun leggings so I went for a Sesame street theme this time, sadly the socks don’t match but they are Pokemon so I think they are ok.

Walking

We are still going on our daily walks and this week we found some lovely stones on our travels.

Baking

I made a Carrot Cake! My first ever Carrot Cake and it was wonderful, probably my best cake since baking in the AGA. Now planning my next baking adventure, suggestions most welcome.

Jigsaws

img_6081.jpg

I finished the Sherlock Holmes jigsaw which was interesting because I had no picture to follow and had to work it all out. I have two jigsaws left to do: a 3000 piece Star Trek jigsaw and a 1000 piece dog jigsaw. The only problem with the 3000 one is that it will take up the whole dinning room table.

TV series and movies

I have now started the second series of Criminal Minds and have discovered that I haven’t actually seen some of the second series so that is proving to be a nice surprise. We are also still enjoying movie nights, we have watched Absolutely Fabulous, The Fantastic Mr Fox, Chalet Girl and The Colony.

Studying continues and ukulele practice.

That is my week so far. I hope everyone else is having a good week.

This and That Thursday

Hello!

This has been another good week of reading and other activities. So here is what I have been up to…

Walk and Pokemon Go playing

We have been going on our daily walks and saying hello to the sheep and I have been playing Pokemon Go.

Jigsaws

I finally finished the one jigsaw and I have started another jigsaw but this one is a mystery as it is a Sherlock Holmes jigsaw so you don’t see the picture and all the items in the jigsaw are attached to the mystery.

Ukulele

The Ukulele is going well and I have started working on Grade One. Hopefully exams will recommence at some point this year.

Baking

TamDkO+QSEKr7ZvHJtPXww.jpg

I had a go at a chocolate torte this week which is a new recipe for me, sadly it caught on the one side but I am slowly getting used to baking in the AGA. Going to try another new recipe next week.

Movie Night

We have done our best to recreate the cinema experience and have watched two films with popcorn and chocolates. Emma was a really good adaptation and we did enjoy a good laugh.

I’ve also done loads of reading!

So that is my week. I hope everyone has had a good week.

This and That Thursday

Hello!

I hope this post finds everyone well and safe. So here is what I have got up to this week other than reading.

Jigsaw

I have started another Jigsaw and now just have the sky left, I always find the sky to be the worst part in a jigsaw.

Cooking and Baking

I have been trying to do a recipe each week that I have never made before and this week was spaghetti carbonara, it was very yummy. I also made one of my favourites, rhubarb crumble with soya custard.

Walking

We are still going on daily walks and regularly go and see these three sheep we have affectionately nicknamed the Three Amigos!

Flute

I have been really enjoying practising the flute everyday for at least an hour, it is so nice to enjoy playing again.

New Skill

mKH8hiV7Rt65VsNh08KIrQ.jpg

I bought a Ukulele and so today I started learning how to play it. Thankfully, I used to play the guitar so it is all coming back. I’m really enjoying learning a new skill so will see how it goes.

So, that is what I have been up to this week. Please drop me a comment with what you have been up to as well.

This and That Thursday

Hello!

With everything going on I am doing lots of things as well as reading to fill my time, so I thought every Thursday I would do a post about my other hobbies other than reading. So here we go…

Jigsaws

I finally completed my Christmas jigsaw that I started in 2017 and started a second jigsaw which was of course cat related. I have at least another two jigsaws to keep me going. All my jigsaws are 1000 pieces so they should keep me busy.

Baking

I have also baked some little cakes with lemon butter icing. I was following a new recipe by Mary Berry and I must admit there seemed to be a lot of icing but they are very yummy. I’m planning Easter nests next as I gave up chocolate for lent so this will be a nice reward.

Exercise

I’ve been trying to keep my fitness up so have been walking everyday and also playing on my Ring Fit Nintendo switch game as well as doing online exercise.

Studying and Music

I have also been studying but it has been disappointing that my final assignment for this year has been cancelled. I have also been practising the organ everyday with the hope of taking another exam either in the summer or winter.

So, that is just a few of the things I have been up to as well as house chores and gardening. What has everybody else been up to over lockdown?

Stay safe.

Lemon Slices Recipe Review

As promised I have had a go at making one of the recipes from The Book Lover’s Guide to Tea, which I reviewed here. I let my husband choose which one to make and he chose the Lemon Slices. The Lemon Slices are paired with the book The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde and the tea is Earl Grey.

The plan was to eat a slice with a nice cup of Earl Grey, you will soon see the result.

Firstly, I found the recipe to be a little like The Great British Bake Off technical challenge, as there was no picture to see what they looked liked. It is also the first recipe where I have had to measure everything with cups, thankfully we have some rather cute cat cups.

ubdQ3MXYThmfp2ZIS7fLxQ

Here is the recipe:

2 cups sifted all-purpose flour

1 cup confectioners’ sugar

1 cup melted butter

4 eggs

2 cups white sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 cup all purpose flour

5/8 lemon juice

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Generously grease a 9x13in pan.

(Temperature was a guess for us as we have an AGA so adapting the temperature is rather tricky as we have to use a cold shelf to get the AGA to a better temperature. Also I do not have a big enough square tin so it had to be a circular pan.)

2. Stir the 2 cups of flour and confectioners’ sugar together. Blend in melted butter, and press into the bottom of the pan.

(I was guessing I was aiming for a biscuit texture like a cheesecake, hopefully that is correct.)

3. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden. In another bowl, beat eggs until light. Combine the sugar, baking powder, and flour, and stir into the eggs. Add the lemon juice, and pour over the prepared crust before returning to the oven.

(The first problem was baking the base and trying to prevent it from burning in the AGA, the edges started to catch slightly so we decided it was time to add the topping and bake for 30 minutes.)

4. Bake for another 30 minutes or until bars are set. Make sure to let cool completely before cutting.

(We had to use two cold shelves to bring the temperature down so the top did not burn but we think it came out rather well.)

It reminds me of a giant custard tart!

As I said at the beginning we planned to eat a slice with a nice cup of Earl Grey, however we were impatient and attempted to cut the Lemon Slice before it was fully cooled, this ended in disaster. Yes, it fell apart, as shown below.

v1zUuBBCSUWCp%eH+pmcxw

For the Earl Grey I got out the best china cups and side plates, these were my aunts who sadly passed away last year and I inherited her china. My aunt never drank tea out of a mug, it was a china cup and saucer or nothing. My aunt also drank more tea than anyone I have ever met, she was a true tea drinker, oh and a tea bag would never do, always loose leaf! It was really nice to use the china and enjoy our tea and think of my aunt telling me Earl Grey is not real tea, whilst drinking her tea with her little finger delicately pointing out. Sadly there is no teapot with the set so we used our little one that we use for loose leaf tea.

We ate the Lemon Slice and it was delicious. Later when it had fully cooled I cut it up and it all stayed together beautifully and worked brilliantly. A definite hit that I will happily make again and goes perfectly with Earl Grey Tea, just like the book says.

In conclusion, as well as loving the little book, I also so far love the recipes and how they are linked to books and teas!
