Blurb

The story’s unlikely heroine is Catherine Morland, a remarkably innocent seventeen-year-old woman from a country parsonage. While spending a few weeks in Bath with a family friend, Catherine meets and falls in love with Henry Tilney, who invites her to visit his family estate, Northanger Abbey. Once there, Catherine, a great reader of Gothic thrillers, lets the shadowy atmosphere of the old mansion fill her mind with terrible suspicions. What is the mystery surrounding the death of Henry’s mother? Is the family concealing a terrible secret within the elegant rooms of the Abbey? Can she trust Henry, or is he part of an evil conspiracy? Catherine finds dreadful portents in the most prosaic events, until Henry persuades her to see the peril in confusing life with art.

Review

I first read this book back in 2002 and I must admit it wasn’t my favourite Austen novel and is one of the reasons I never bothered to read it again. However, I decided to give it another go this year because I remembered part of it is set in Bath which is one of my favourite places. I absolutely loved the descriptions of places I love in Bath and kept telling my husband where the characters were.

I am so pleased I decided to give this book another go because I absolutely loved it and couldn’t put it down. Northanger Abbey is a hilarious coming of age and satire novel of the gothic genre. Instead of finding Catherine annoying which I did in my first read I found her adorable, funny and when she let her imagination run away with her I cringed for her but also understood where she had come from. Catherine loved reading novels especially novels by Ann Radcliffe so how could she not help imagining crazy gothic mysteries around every corner. When I read The Mysteries of Udolpho I also saw the potential for  gothic mysteries everywhere.

Henry Tilney is definitely a new favourite character of mine from the Austen novels. He loves reading novels and doesn’t dismiss Catherine’s love of reading gothic novels like the pompous John Thorpe who I really could not stand. Tilney is a true gentleman, he takes time with Catherine, he listens to her and enjoys her company. He also forgives Catherine’s mistakes.

Isabella Thorpe is a character much like her brother but it doesn’t become clear straight away. In fact the Thorpe family were just terrible full stop and I could easily see how Austen had been influenced by people she knew in society. The people in society she clearly disliked and had little time for.

I loved this book and would happily read it again and again. I really appreciated this book more now that I am older. I give this book a massive 5 out of 5 Dragons.

Stacking the Shelves: 30/8/2025

Stacking The Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Marlene of Reading Reality. It is all about sharing the books that you have recently added to your bookshelves. These books can be physical books, ebooks and of course audiobooks.

Hello!

This week has involved a lot of book shopping and a preordered book arriving. I can’t wait to get stuck into reading them all. I went to my favourite bookshops in Bath this week and had one delivery from Waterstones.

Persephone Books

I’m not going to do pictures of these books because they all have the same cover and are never very clear in the pictures. My dream is to own the complete set of Persephone Books and one day read them all.

  • Mariana by Monica Dickens
  • Someone at a Distance by Dorothy Whipple
  • Fidelity by Susan Glaspell

Mr B’s Emporium

I’ve seen some interesting reviews of the Great Eastern Hotel by Ruchir Joshi so I thought I would purchase it and give it a read. The book is huge so it will take me a while.

Unfortunately She Was A Nymphomaniac by Joan Smith looks like a very different history of Rome’s Imperial women.

Toppings and Company Booksellers of Bath

I always try and add another Alison Weir book to my collection and I am thoroughly looking forward to reading Elizabeth The Queen because Elizabeth is my favourite monarch.

Phoenicia Rogerson is a new author for me but I am looking forward to reading her version of Aphrodite.

She Played and Sang by Gillian Dooley looks like a fascinating read about Jane Austen. As a musician myself I am looking forward to reading about Austen’s love of music.

Waterstones

This was my preordered book. R. F. Kuang is a bit of an auto buy author for me so I am very excited to read her new book.

I can’t wait to get reading!

This and That Thursday

Hello!

It has been a busy summer for me so I thought it was time to do a This and That Thursday post.

Rhodes

For our summer holiday this year we went to Rhodes. We loved Kos when we went in 2023 so we thought it was time for another Greek island. We spent some time seeing the sights and some time by the pool reading loads of books.

Harvington Hall History Festival

I attended two of the events at the history festival this year. One by was Alison Weir and one by Tracy Borman. I also attended the book signings they kindly did at the end. The Harvington Hall cats were also in attendance but I wasn’t lucky enough to get a photo.

National Trust

We have also attended a few National trust places this summer. The first was a new one for us called Canons Ashby. Canons Ashby was a lovely Tudor property which was just like a maze. There were so many little staircases and little corridors I absolutely loved it.

Next was Waddeson Manor which was a return visit for us. It is definitely one of our favourite places to visit and they do a very nice afternoon tea as well.

We met my best friend at Charlecote Park last week and the weather was beautiful. We also had a great time helping my best friend’s son fill out the activity sheet where we had to work out whether certain things were ‘Tudor’ or ‘Not Tudor’.

Bath

We spent Bank Holiday weekend in Bath where we visited the Victoria Art Gallery and No. 1 Royal Crescent. I also did a lot of book shopping and eating of yummy food.

I am back teaching next week but this summer has been a lovely break with some great adventures. I am hoping that we will fit in more adventures around work.

This and That Thursday

Hello!

I thought it was time to do a non bookish post as I haven’t done a This and That Thursday since November 2024.

Bath

December was super busy work wise but we also managed a little holiday in Bath to visit the Bath Christmas market. I love visiting the market to buy Christmas presents and this year Abbie who owns the Etsy store Britishbookart was doing a stall so I bought several Christmas presents for my niece and myself. I have also since bought more items from her site. If you haven’t seen her book trackers please visit her Etsy and have a look.

We also did some sight seeing and did our traditional afternoon tea at the Pump Rooms.

Etsy

I have also been super busy with my own Etsy shop and the TBR Tickets and Bumble Bee Bookmarks have been super popular. I love my little Etsy shop and love making and designing the bookmarks.

National Trust

We have been visiting some of our favourite local National Trust places. At this time of year a lot of National Trust places are closed but we like to support any that are open. Berrington Hall is definitely one our favourites.

Walking

We have been trying to get back into our walking again because we are still trying to finish our Mordor medal with the Conqueror Challenges. However, the house is still undergoing building work so have we have been a bit house bound at times. When we have managed to go for a walk it has been really nice to see the sheep and the horses that are in local fields near where we live.

Centre of Excellence

I have also been back to studying with the Centre of Excellence. I am currently about a quarter of the way through the History of Art course and I am absolutely loving it. I really enjoy their courses and find them perfect introductions to subjects that I might decide to do further reading around.

So there are my recent exploits.

Hello!

This week I spent a few days in Bath and of course this resulted in book shopping. Bath has some of my favourite bookshops and this always results in a quite a few book purchases.

I bought books from three bookshops.

Mr B’s Emporium

I only bought one book from Mr B’s which was quite restrained. I’ve been wanting a really nice edition of the Hogfather by Terry Pratchett for ages and I really want to re read over Christmas.

Topping and Company Booksellers

I got distracted by the Christmas books again and I bought two new ones. I’m really not sure I will manage to read all these Christmas books over December as the pile is getting higher and higher. However, I do keep reading Christmas books until January 6th so I might manage to finish the pile.

Samantha Shannon and Silvia Moreno-Garcia are two of my favourite authors so I was quite excited to get these pretty hardbacks.

Persephone Books

I only bought two Persephone books and another is a Christmas gift. I was hoping to buy a few more but sadly the shop was full of hyacinths. As pretty as hyacinths are I am also highly allergic and was really struggling to breathe so it was a quick in and out of the shop.

I bought:

Little Boy Lost by Marghanita Laski

William – An Englishman by Cicely Hamilton

My TBR pile is getting bigger and bigger but I’m really hoping I can get loads of reading done this month.

This and That Thursday

Hello!

I thought it was high time for a post about my escapades outside of reading. The Easter school holidays was rather busy for me as I took some time off teaching and went on some adventures.

Bath

We usually go to Bath at least once a year, usually more but we have never gone at this time of year so we thought we would see what it was like. It was busier than we are used to but it was still a fab little break. It also involved quite a bit of book buying.

It wasn’t all book buying though. We also had a lovely afternoon tea at the Pump Rooms, we visited the Ladybird exhibition at the Victoria Art Gallery and we went to Dyrham Park just outside of Bath. We also did lots of walking and eating out.

Cambridge

I also visited Cambridge for the first time. I met up with my best friends and we had a good little explore. The weather was terrible so we had to do a lot of ducking out of the rain but we did manage some book shopping and we visited a very interesting museum. We also had great fun spotting all the giraffes!

Croft Castle and the Ironbridge Museum of the Gorge

We have also been doing some visiting closer to home. A couple of weeks ago we visited one of our favourites which is Croft Castle and today we visited a new place which was the Ironbride Museum of the Gorge. The Museum of the Gorge has only just recently reopened which is why we have never visited as we like to visit Ironbride. I also did a tiny bit of book shopping!

This and That Thursday

Hello!

I hope everyone is having a good week so far. I have been busy working and getting ready for Christmas but I have also managed some fun adventures as well.

Wightwick Manor

We went back to one of our favourite National Trust places to see their Christmas displays this year. I really enjoyed the theme of A Christmas Carol and thought it was beautifully done. I always find Wightwick so quirky and pretty but with the decorations this year as well it really was magical.

Christmas Stall

I have recently done my first Christmas stall with my new business Lyra’s Pawsome Books. I really enjoyed the day and sold some items as well which was an added bonus. I will be definitely doing more stalls in 2023.

Bath Christmas Market

Last week we stayed in Bath for a few days and did loads of Christmas shopping at the Christmas Market. It was really nice to get away for a few days before it gets really busy work wise over Christmas.

Frankenstein Museum

There were parts of this which I found interesting but I did not like the weird smells that also came with the displays. It was quite creepy in places but it was funny to see just how much the monster has been used in film, TV and advertising over the years.

On the run up to Christmas we have some more Christmas adventures planned but the main thing we will be doing is prepping and playing for Christmas jobs. I am hoping to get some reading done on the run up to Christmas and also some more products for my Etsy.

This and That Thursday

Hello!

I thought it was time for another adventure update. I was on half term last week which meant more adventures as I had no teaching.

Bath

We spent a few days in Bath which obviously meant lots of book shopping but we also went to a few nice places for cocktails. We also visited the Jane Austen museum which we haven’t been to for quite a few years. I really like the Jane Austen museum as I find it really interesting and the gift shop has some beautiful items for sale. The Jane Austen tea room is also very nice.

We had a champagne afternoon tea at the Pump Rooms which was really yummy and in the evening we went to the theatre to watch and listen to the opera Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell which my husband very kindly got me for my birthday. I studied part of the Dido and Aeneas opera at university and I have always wanted to see it live so I was really pleased to get the chance to see it.

On our last day we went to see the Rodin and Degas exhibition at the Holburne Museum. I love the Holburne Museum and it has become a tradition to always visit when we are in Bath and see the latest exhibition.

Wimpole Hall

I also went to Wimpole Hall and Farm to meet my best friend who I haven’t seen for ages. Wimpole Hall has one of my favourite libraries in the National Trust. The library is huge and has a book room attached, I would just love to spend all day in there reading and drinking tea. We also went to the farm and saw the latest arrivals of the piglets which were very cute and had lots of fuss off a very handsome shire horse called Stanley.

We are hoping to go on some Christmas related adventures very soon as you can’t beat a nice festive adventure.

Bath

I thought I would share a few snaps of my trip to Bath. This was my third visit to Bath and will not be my last as I just adore the place. This trip I visited some of the haunts that Jane Austen would of also frequented when she lived there from 1801 to 1806. I wish I had taken more snaps but I just enjoyed taking in the history and beauty of it.
