First Lines Friday: 12/06/2020

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

Hello!

Welcome to my first ever First Lines Friday! I have been following this weekly feature for a while now and have decided to give it a go because I have been enjoying reading people’s posts and trying to guess the book.

So here are the first lines…

(The answer is below the cats!)

Her skin was rather sallow, Anne thought as she studied herself in the silver mirror, and she had too many moles, but at least her face was a fashionable oval. At eleven she had no womanly figure to speak of, but that hopefully would change in the next year or so.

The answer is Anne Boleyn: A King’s Obsession by Alison Weir

Fresh from the palaces of Burgundy and France, Anne draws attention at the English court, embracing the play of courtly love.

But when the King commands, nothing is ever a game.

Anne has a spirit worthy of a crown – and the crown is what she seeks. At any price.

Friday Poetry: Stevie Smith

Happy Friday!

I hope all my fellow Book Dragons have some good books planned for the weekend.

This week’s poem is only short but it hits home with me at this time. This poem is about friendship and spending time with friends. I must admit I miss my friends at the moment. My best friend is a 4 hour car journey away and I miss her like crazy. We speak daily but it isn’t the same as a proper catch up. Hopefully we will be able to meet up soon.

Florence Margaret Smith, known as Stevie Smith (20th September 1902 – 7th March 1971), was an English poet and novelist. She was awarded the Cholmondelay Award for Poets and won the Queen’s Gold Medal for poetry.

The Pleasures of Friendship

The pleasures of friendship are exquisite,

How pleasant to go to a friend on a visit!

I go to my friend, we walk on the grass,

And the hours and moments like minutes pass.

Stevie Smith.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

This and That Thursday

Hello

I hope everyone is well and having a good reading week.

This is what I have been up to this week other than reading.

Baking

This week is my mom’s birthday so I put my baking skills to the test and baked a chocolate brownie cake with chocolate fudge icing. My icing skills need work as you can see. I have very shaky hands sadly due to medication so icing was a bit tricky for me. My mom thankfully still enjoyed the cake.

Paint by Numbers

My friend gave myself and another friend a paint by numbers each and whilst my two friends are really getting into their paint by numbers I have been struggling, the shaky hands and the bad eyesight are probably something to do with this. Oh well I persevere and hopefully it will look good by the end.

Studying

This week’s studies have been rather interesting as I have been learning all about Ancient Greek and Roman medicine and hygiene practices. I must admit it has been a bit disgusting at times.

The usual things continue i.e teaching, duet recording, walking and TV series watching. I have been really enjoying reading everyone’s blogs this week and have added quite a few books onto my TBR list from reading people’s reviews.

So that is my week, I hope everyone else has also had a good week.

Happy Reading my fellow Book Dragons!

Today’s chosen quote is by Christie Brinkley (born 1954), an American model, actress and entrepreneur.

I love this quote and when I saw it I had to share.

“Share your smile with the world. It’s a symbol of friendship and peace.”

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins (Review)

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins

About the author

2C071F93-06A4-4EB7-A345-8054F253EFA5

Suzanne Collins (born August 10, 1962) is an American television writer and author. She is known as the author of The Underland Chronicles and The Hunger Games trilogy.

Blurb

It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the tenth annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, eighteen-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to out charm, outwit, and out manoeuvre his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute.

The odds are against him. He’s been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low. Their fates are now completely intertwined — every choice Coriolanus makes could lead to favour or failure, triumph or ruin. Inside the arena, it will be a fight to the death. Outside the arena, Coriolanus starts to feel for his doomed tribute . . . and must weigh his need to follow the rules against his desire to survive no matter what it takes.

Review

I was so excited when I saw this book was being released as I love The Hunger Games trilogy so I immediately preordered the book and started reading it as soon as it arrived on my doorstep. I will be honest I did not read it as quickly as I wanted but my course reading delayed things slightly, otherwise this book would have been finished in a very short period of time as I could not put it down.

It was so wonderful to revisit the world of The Hunger Games again and I was not disappointed. I know a lot of people have not been happy with this book but I think it is because they weren’t expecting it to be about a young President Snow and how he came to be. I also liked how different this book was from The Hunger Games, it was a lot more philosophical and thought provoking than the trilogy. It really made me think about the human condition and what a human can be capable of in the right conditions.

Seeing an early version of the Hunger Games before all the glamour and showbiz that appears in the trilogy was really interesting. The arena was a plain old beaten up sports arena and nothing fancy, it was a very different perspective. The tributes were also treated very differently and I felt really sorry for them, especially Lucy Gray.

Lucy Gray was an interesting character who I couldn’t help but feel sorry for. This poor girl  who loves music and is very gifted has the roughest ride possible. She also sings the song that we know so well from The Hunger Games. I really liked Lucy Gray and the Covey, they were interesting characters and I would have loved to have learned more about them.

Seeing Snow as an 18 year old boy and learning about how he lived through the war was also an eye opener that you do not see in the trilogy. The war was brutal for everyone and the things that people resorted to to survive were extreme and not something usually seen when the world is normal.

This story is primarily the development of the tyrant President Snow and how he came to be how he is. You can see how this 18 year old will make choices in his life to get where he wants to be. He won’t care who gets in his way or who gets hurt, the only thing that matters is that he gets to the top.

Overall, I loved this book and highly recommend it but I know some Hunger Games fans will not agree as it is rather different. I give this book a big 5 out of 5 Dragons.

Friday Poetry: Emily Dickinson

Hello and Happy Friday!

I have gone for another Emily Dickinson poem this week, I promise I’m not obsessed, I think…

I like this poem because it has an air of mystery because you don’t actually know what the thing that Emily Dickinson has lost is. It also shows that to us it might be important but to somebody else it might be a trivial thing.

I Lost a World – the Other Day!

I lost a World – the other day!

Has Anybody found?

You’ll know it by the Row of Stars

Around its forehead bound.

A Rich man – might not notice it –

Yet – to my frugal Eye,

Of more Esteem than Ducats –

Oh find it – Sir – for me!

Emily Dickinson

Happy weekend everyone.

This and That Thursday

Good morning everyone!

I hope this post finds you all well. I can’t believe it is Thursday already, the weeks are flying by. I am now doing more teaching online which is keeping me busy for some reason it does mean more prep work for each lesson because it is online. So here is what I have been up to during the rest of my time.

Exercise

I am still exercising regularly and have discovered the walking workouts by Leslie Sansone. I have been doing the ones I have found on YouTube and thoroughly enjoying them. I have treated myself to one of her DVDs as well which I am looking forward to having a go at soon. I am still doing my Davina workouts but it is nice to have a change and mix things up a bit.

Baking

I made a chocolate swirly cake this week, sadly it was a little drier than I would have liked but it was my own fault I left it in the AGA too long. Hopefully my next cake will be better.

Studying

The studying continues although I do need to get back into it more as I have fallen behind slightly.

TV and Movies

We have been watching quite a few movies in an evening and have just started watching all the Harry Potter films from the beginning. We have also started watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer from the very beginning which is bringing back memories of watching it when I was a teenager, turns out I missed quite a few episodes.

Cats

I seem to have spent a great deal of time this week brushing our cats because as soon as I vacuum there is cat fur everywhere straight after. Hopefully my efforts are helping!

That’s about it for now! I had a present off my friend arrive today which is an enormous Paint by Numbers so that will probably feature in next week’s post. Wish me luck I’ve never attempted one before.

Mid Week Quote: Jascha Heifetz

Happy Wednesday!

I have chosen a quote by Jascha Heifetz (1901-1987) this week who was a Russian-American violinist, many believe he was the greatest violinist.

This quote inspires us to keep striving upwards.

“There is no top. There are always further heights to reach.”

Jascha Heifetz

Happy reading
