The Dragon Reborn by Robert Jordan (Review)

The Dragon Reborn by Robert Jordan

Blurb

The Dragon Reborn—the leader long prophesied who will save the world, but in the saving destroy it; the saviour who will run mad and kill all those dearest to him—is on the run from his destiny.

Able to touch the One Power, but unable to control it, and with no one to teach him how—for no man has done it in three thousand years—Rand al’Thor knows only that he must face the Dark One. But how?

Winter has stopped the war—almost—yet men are dying, calling out for the Dragon. But where is he?

Perrin Aybara is in pursuit with Moiraine Sedai, her Warder Lan, and Loial the Ogier. Bedeviled by dreams, Perrin is grappling with another deadly problem—how is he to escape the loss of his own humanity?

Egwene, Elayne and Nynaeve are approaching Tar Valon, where Mat will be healed—if he lives until they arrive. But who will tell the Amyrlin their news—that the Black Ajah, long thought only a hideous rumour, is all too real? They cannot know that in Tar Valon far worse awaits…

Ahead, for all of them, in the Heart of the Stone, lies the next great test of the Dragon reborn….

Review

This is the third time I have read this book but this time through I am determined to actually finish the series and not give up after book 5.

I really enjoyed this book because it wasn’t overly focused on Rand, the events the book focuses on are linked with Rand but isn’t thankfully on him. I will be honest Rand drives me up the wall. All I want to do with Rand is shake him and tell him to stop being a stroppy teenager and grow up.

My favourite character in this book is Perrin. Perrin has a lot to deal with but he doesn’t sulk and act out, he handles it like a man. Perrin has discovered something about himself and it is hard for him to accept but he is trying to deal with it as best he can. Perrin is with Moraine Sedai, Lan and Loial in pursuit of Rand and the pursuit is not easy because Perrin doesn’t know who to trust and because he sees the devastation that follows Rand wherever he goes.

This book also lets us spend more time with Egwene, Elayne and Nynaeve which is nice because we start to see what strong characters these three women are. We also get to learn more about Tar Valon which I find fascinating. I really hope we learn more about the tower and the history of the Aes Sedai in the next books.

This book also introduces more of the Forsaken and gives us more of the history about them. We learn how many are no longer imprisoned and we learn more about the individual Forsaken backgrounds. We also learn that more people are Darkfriends and that nobody can be truly trusted.

I really enjoyed this book and I think I enjoyed it more than the previous times I have read the book. I plan on really getting into the series during 2023 but I know that certain books in the series are not as good as others. I give this book 5 out of 5 Dragons.

Reading Goals Check In

Hello!

I thought it was time to check how my reading goals for 2022 are going.

  • My first goal was to read 60 books this year. So far I have read 25 books out of the 60. This means I am slightly behind my target currently but I’m not too worried as I usually read more in the summer when I am not working as much and in December.
  • My second goal was to read more classics this year with the aim of reading 10. To help with this goal I joined The Classics Club challenge and set myself 50 classics to read in 5 years. Here is my list. So far I have read 3 classics and I am currently reading my 4th classic book which is also rather huge. If some of the next ones I read are on the smaller side I might be able to complete my aim of 10 books.
  • Third goal was to read more poetry. I set myself the task of reading A Poem for Every Night of the Year and A Poem for Every Day of the Year. The idea was to read two poems a day but to be honest I have fallen a little bit behind. I am still reading poetry at least once a week though which is way better than I have done in the past so I am definitely doing well on this goal.
  • My final goal was to finish three book series and start another one. The series to start is The Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski. The three series to finish are:
    • The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan
    • The Expanse series by James S. A. Corey
    • Shardlake series by C. J. Sansom

I haven’t finished any series yet but I have moved forward with them all. I haven’t started The Witcher series though yet. To be honest I know I won’t finish The Wheel of Time series this year but I hope to make good progress with it. I do hope to finish The Expanse series and The Shardlake series though.

I’m not too worried that so far I am a little behind with my reading goals. My overall aim was to have a more relaxed reading experience this year and so far I think I am managing that and that is the main thing.

I hope everyone’s reading goals are going well so far this year.

Top 5 Tuesday: Series I Haven’t Finished

Top 5 Tuesday was created by Shanah at Bionic Book Worm, and now being hosted by Meeghan reads.

Hello!

I thought this weeks prompt for Top 5 Tuesday was a good one for me as I am rather hopeless at finishing book series.

  1. The Wheel of Time – When I first started reading this series I read the first 5 books then gave up. A year later I tried again and reread the first 3 books. Now after 7 years I am attempting the series again and I have nearly finished the second book. I am also determined that this time I will finish the series.
  2. Shardlake – I started this series last year and read the first two books but I need to get back to get back to reading the series because I do really like the character of Shardlake and the books.
  3. The Expanse – I started this series last year and read the first 4 books. I absolutely love this series so I am looking forward to getting back into it.
  4. A Song of Ice and Fire – My not finishing this series is not my fault. Like a lot of readers, I am desperately waiting for Mr Martin to write the next book in the series.
  5. The d’Artagnan Romances – I love The Three Musketeers and have read it more times than I remember. I have also read and loved Twenty Years After. I would really like to finish this series as I just love the characters.

Fingers crossed I finish these series sometime in the future.

Please drop me a link if you have taken part in Top 5 Tuesday and I will head over for a visit.

Top 5 Tuesday: Series I Haven’t Finished

Top 5 Tuesday was created by Shanah at Bionic Book Worm, and now being hosted by Meeghan reads.

Hello!

This is one that is apt for me as I am rather useless at finishing series but I do try. Although it really does frustrate me when an author doesn’t finish the next book in the series and I am desperately waiting for it, mentioning no names George R. R. Martin!

So here are the series that I haven’t managed to finish…

A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin

I flew through this series and enjoyed reading it so much I bought the box sets for two of my nephews to read. However, I am beginning to feel I will never find out the ending due to Martin’s lack of publishing the next books!

The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan

I own nearly the entire series and I am lucky enough to have a signed edition of one of the books but I must admit I have never got beyond book 5. I have tried again and reread the first 3 but then I get distracted and give up. I really like the story though and want to finish it but I’m not a great one for patience sadly.

The Expanse by James S. A. Corey

I started this series just this year and have just finished the second book. So far I absolutely love the series so I am hoping to read them all this year.

Shardlake by C. J. Sansom

Another series I started this year and hope to continue with.

Six Tudor Queens by Alison Weir

I love this series and can’t wait for Weir to finish writing the last book in the series.

There are my five series that I have not yet completed. Are there any series that you have not yet completed? Please drop me a comment if you have also taken part in today’s Top 5 Tuesday and I will head over for a visit.

Top Five Tuesday: Series I Want to Start

This meme is hosted by Shanah @  Bionic Book Worm. For more details head over to her blog.

I really liked the look of this weeks theme as there are loads of series I would like to start but I’m a bit naughty with books in a series and I tend to give up or read the books in the wrong order. So here are my Top Five Series I Want to Start…

1. The 100 Series by Kass Morgan

I own all the books in this series and they are currently sat on my TBR pile making me feel guilty for not starting them yet. I haven’t seen the TV series but my husband has watched them all.

2. The Expanse (Novel series) by James S. A. Corey

I love the TV series of this and I own the first book in the series which I really want to start as I love a sci-fi book.

3. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

This is another series that I own but have never attempted reading but really want to but the first book is rather thick and tends to put me off slightly.

4. Languedoc Series by Kate Moss

14975

I love the sound of this series and to be honest I’m not sure why I haven’t read them yet. Maybe something to start whilst in lockdown.

5. The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb

45107

I have read some of Robin Hobb’s books in the past and really enjoyed them so would love to read this series.

So that is my Top Five Tuesday this week. Please drop me a link with your Top Five and please give me your thoughts on the series I have mentioned if you have read them.
