February 2024 TBR

Hello!

I have decided that every month I will choose four books to try and read in the month. Out of the four books I had planned in January I actually managed to read two of them and I started another one yesterday. The one book I finished yesterday. I’m not great at sticking to a TBR list so I was quite pleased that I had actually managed to read two.

Three of these books have been sat on my TBR pile for way too long and one is a brand new book. I am still reading another book off my January TBR so once I have finished it I will hopefully move on to one of these books.

Goodreads Monday: 29/1/2024

Goodreads Monday is now hosted by Budget Tales Book Club.  All you have to do is show off a book from your TBR that you’re looking forward to reading.

Hello and Happy Monday!

I must admit I am not very happy with my lack of reading in January, I can’t remember such a bad month reading wise and I’m not even in a reading slump. I just can’t find the time like I usually do.

I am really hoping my reading increases in February. One of the books I think I would like to read in February is this one.

From beloved, award-winning poet Aimee Nezhukumatathil comes a debut work of nonfiction–a collection of essays about the natural world, and the way its inhabitants can teach, support, and inspire us.

As a child, Nezhukumatathil called many places home: the grounds of a Kansas mental institution, where her Filipina mother was a doctor; the open skies and tall mountains of Arizona, where she hiked with her Indian father; and the chillier climes of western New York and Ohio. But no matter where she was transplanted–no matter how awkward the fit or forbidding the landscape–she was able to turn to our world’s fierce and funny creatures for guidance.

“What the peacock can do,” she tells us, “is remind you of a home you will run away from and run back to all your life.” The axolotl teaches us to smile, even in the face of unkindness; the touch-me-not plant shows us how to shake off unwanted advances; the narwhal demonstrates how to survive in hostile environments. Even in the strange and the unlovely, Nezhukumatathil finds beauty and kinship. For it is this way with wonder: it requires that we are curious enough to look past the distractions in order to fully appreciate the world’s gifts.

Warm, lyrical, and gorgeously illustrated by Fumi Nakamura, World of Wonders is a book of sustenance and joy.

Stacking the Shelves: 27/1/2024

Stacking The Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Marlene of Reading Reality. It is all about sharing the books that you have recently added to your bookshelves. These books can be physical books, ebooks and of course audiobooks.

Hello!

I hope everyone is having a good weekend so far. Now, I know I said that 2024 was the year I buy hardly any books and instead read through the books that I own. Well so far that hasn’t gone exactly according to plan. In my defence these books were bought in my new independent local bookshop which I hadn’t visited yet and wanted to support. February will be a better month for not buying books but my new local bookshop does have a loyalty card scheme so all hope on that front might now be lost.

Anyway, to the books!

  • 365 Poems for Life – I love these poetry books compiled by Allie Esiri and I now own several of them so when I saw this new one I knew I had to have it and so far it does not disappoint.
  • A Death in Diamonds by S. J. Bennett – I have read the first book in this series and my husband has read the second book but not the first so between us we are going well with the series. Hopefully, I will read more of this series this year.
  • The Shadow King by Harry Sidebottom – This is a new author for me but I loved the sound of the book so I bought it and hope to read it soon.

Happy Reading!

  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you will read next?

Hello!

I have finally finished a book in 2024! I honestly thought I wouldn’t get a book finished this month as my reading has really slowed down.

What I am Currently Reading

I was doing my chapter a day of this but I have got to a really good bit and so I am rather ahead and only reading this book at the moment. I had forgotten how much I enjoy the Wheel of Time series but I could really do without Mat as he rather annoying.

What I have Recently Finished Reading

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I love how the Countess of Carnarvon makes history come alive. My review is here.

What I Think I will Read Next

I think at the moment I will aim for shorter reads but I never know for sure what I will go for as I am an extreme mood reader.

Please drop me a comment with your WWW Wednesday and I will head over for a visit.

Goodreads Monday: 15/1/2024

Goodreads Monday is now hosted by Budget Tales Book Club.  All you have to do is show off a book from your TBR that you’re looking forward to reading.

Hello!

Welcome to my first Goodreads Monday of 2024. My chosen book this week is one off my 24 Books of 2024 list. It is also one I bought just before Christmas and have been very excited to read as it is by one of my favourite historians.

Medieval queens were seen as mere dynastic trophies, yet many of the Plantagenet queens of the High Middle Ages dramatically broke away from the restrictions imposed on their sex, as Alison Weir shows in this gripping group biography of England’s fourteenth-century consorts.

Using personal letters and wonderfully vivid sources, Alison Weir evokes the lives of five remarkable Marguerite of France, Isabella of France, Philippa of Hainault, Anne of Bohemia and Isabella of Valois.

The turbulent, brutal Age of Chivalry witnessed the Black Death, the Peasants’ Revolt, the Hundred Years War against France and savage baronial wars against the monarchy in which these queens were passionately involved. Queens of the Age of Chivalry brilliantly recreates this truly dramatic period of history through the lives of five extraordinary women.

January 2024 TBR

Hello!

I hope everyone is having a good week so far. As predicted my reading has plummeted since been back at work but I’m hoping that I will manage to at least read one book per week.

Here are my planned reads for January.

I actually started The Other Queen in December 2023 but I only read about a quarter of it before work and Christmas prep got in the way, I was really enjoying it so I hope to finish it this month. I really hope I read some of these books but as you have all worked out by now I’m not great with TBR plans as it all depends on what mood I am in.

I hope everyone has some exciting reads planned for January.

24 Books in 2024

Hello!

I decided 2024 was the year I read through some of the books that I own and that have sat on my TBR pile for way too long. So with this in mind I have selected 24 books off this TBR pile and have decided to try and read them all in 2024. I have popped a few rereads on to this list as well because I really wanted to read them again this year.

  2. The Midnight Folk by John Masefield
  3. The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
  4. The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley

  6. Tudor England A History by Lucy Wooding
  7. Queens of the Age of Chivalry by Alison Weir

  21. Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

  • What do you think you will read next?

Hello!

My first week in 2024 has been wonderful for reading. I am thoroughly enjoying my free time and rather dreading going back to work next week because I know I won’t be able to read so much.

What I am Currently Reading

I actually read two and a bit chapters of The Shadow Rising today so I am already ahead with my challenge of reading one chapter a day. I had forgotten just how good this book is but I did read it in 2014 for I have forgotten quite a bit. The Earl and the Pharaoh is a fascinating read and a real eye opener about how the super rich lived in the 1890’s.

What I have Recently Finished Reading

I crammed quite a few books in the last week of 2023 and here is three of them. I have the full set of the Penguin Classics little black books but have only read a few so it was good to tick a few more off the list.

What I Think I will Read Next

This year is all about reading the books I own and these are currently sat in a big pile waiting to be read.

Please drop me a comment with your WWW Wednesday and I will head over for a visit.

Hello!

I hope everyone is having a good week so far. I have just returned from playing for my second Carol Service this year. I do love a Carol service and I love playing carols. I’m really starting to feel festive. My festive reads has also helped.

What I am Currently Reading

I have literally only just started this so I don’t know what to make of it yet. Fingers crossed it will be good.

What I have Recently Finished Reading

I finished both of these books this week and really enjoyed both of them. I read The Nutcracker every year as my Christmas tradition but I always try to get a different translation and this one did not disappoint and I flew through the book in two sittings.

What I Think I will Read Next

I’m not sure what I will next but I am looking forward to my reading plans in 2024 which will make quite a difference to my TBR pile I hope.

Goodreads Monday is now hosted by Budget Tales Book Club.  All you have to do is show off a book from your TBR that you’re looking forward to reading.

Hello!

I hope everyone has had a good start to the week today. I have had the day off so I had a lovely morning reading then went to a National Trust property to enjoy some Christmas decorations.

My chosen book to feature off my Goodreads TBR this week is another one that has sat on my TBR for way too long.

Sarah Perry’s award-winning novel, set at the end of the nineteenth century and inspired by true events.

Moving between Essex and London, myth and modernity, Cora Seaborne’s spirited search for the Essex Serpent encourages all around her to test their allegiance to faith or reason in an age of rapid scientific advancement. At the same time, the novel explores the boundaries of love and friendship and the allegiances that we have to one another. The depth of feeling that the inhabitants of Aldwinter share are matched by their city counterparts as they strive to find the courage to express and understand their deepest desires, and strongest fears.
