This and That Thursday

Hello!

I hope everyone is having a good week so far.

I thought I would do a non bookish update. Last week was half term which meant I didn’t have any school teaching but I did still do my private teaching and organ playing for church. This meant I had a little bit more free time which meant another adventure.

Adventure

We managed to get away for a night which was lovely and we treated ourselves to a tasting menu at the hotel restaurant. The hotel was absolutely beautiful and was an amazing place to stay with gorgeous grounds. They also had some enormous chairs which I think would be super comfy for reading in.

Walking and fitness

This week has involved getting back into our walking and I decided that for Lent this year we would aim to walk outside at least a mile a day with the hope of walking longer. However, since the start of Lent all it has done is rain and because my asthma is really bad in damp weather we have only managed our mile a day but fingers crossed for better weather and longer walks soon. I have also got back into my fitness recently after a few stop starts from ill health. I am particularly enjoying my new spin bike and following the Kaleigh Cohen cycling classes on Youtube.

Jigsaw

I am still ploughing away with my Winnie the Pooh 1000 piece jigsaw and I will be honest it might just be the hardest jigsaw I have ever attempted. I will post a picture once I have got further along with it or by some miracle finish it.

WWW Wednesday: 2/03/2022

WWW Wednesday is a meme hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Words.

The rules are answer the questions below and share a link to your blog in the comments section of Sam’s blog.

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you will read next?

Hello!

Happy Wednesday! I hope everyone is having a good week so far. I’ve got back into my reading this week but have realised I am really behind on my book reviews so I must start catching up. Anyway, here is what I have been reading recently.

What I am Currently Reading

I’ve paused a bit on An Immortal Guardians Companion but I have been dipping into the interviews. I have just started Wonderlands and so far I am enjoying it but I am missing the rest of the Discovery crew.

What I have Recently Finished Reading

I absolutely loved Moll Flanders. Galatea was rather a disappointment sadly.

What I Think I will Read Next

I’m not sure what I will read next but I think it will either be the Shardlake series or The Expanse series.

Please drop me a comment with your WWW Wednesday and I will head over for a visit.

February 2022 Wrap Up

Hello!

February was not such a great month reading. I am finding that The Wheel of Time books are rather slowing my reading down due to the sheer size of them but I am still aiming to read one a month.

Goodreads Monday: 28/02/2022

Goodreads Monday is now hosted by Budget Tales Book Club.  All you have to do is show off a book from your TBR that you’re looking forward to reading.

I am continuing with featuring books off my Classics Club list and I am also linking my Goodreads Monday posts on the main list as well so I don’t forget which books I have featured.

Love in Excess is a well-crafted novel in which the claims of love and ambition are pursued through multiple storylines until the heroine engineers a melodramatic conclusion. Love in Excess and its reception provide a lively and valuable record of the challenge that female desire posed to social decorum.

This is a new author for me. I made sure that when I built my list of Classics books I had some new authors as well as old favourites. I always like discovering new authors especially if they have written lots of good books that I can add to my TBR.

Please drop me a comment if you have taken part in Goodreads Monday and I will head over for a visit.

Friday Poetry: Eleanor Farjeon

Happy Friday!

I hope everyone has had a good week so far.

My chosen poem this week is by Eleanor Farjeon.

The Night Will Never Stay

The night will never stay,
The night will still go by,
Though with a million stars
You pin it to the sky,
Though you bind it with the blowing wind
And buckle it with the moon,
The night will slip away
Like sorrow or a tune.

Mid Week Quote: Charles W. Eliot

Hello!

I hope everyone is having a good week so far.

My chosen quote this week is by the American academic Charles William Eliot (1834-1926) who was Harvard president from 1869-1909.

Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers.

Goodreads Monday: 21/02/2022

Goodreads Monday is now hosted by Budget Tales Book Club.  All you have to do is show off a book from your TBR that you’re looking forward to reading.

Hello!

I hope everyone has had a good start to the week. I have been trying to catch up on chores today but I did manage some quiet time with my book as well.

I am continuing with featuring books off my Classics Club list and I am also linking my Goodreads Monday posts on the main list as well so I don’t forget which books I have featured.

Wilkie Collins is rightly regarded as one of the nineteenth century’s most eminent writers. Although many Persephone readers will know The Woman in White and The Moonstone, he in fact published twenty-one other novels. The New Magdalen (1873), Persephone Book No.138, is about a ‘fallen woman’, Mercy Merrick, attempting to rehabilitate her character and her reputation; and the (often reprehensible and unkind) attitude of some of those around her.

I absolutely loved reading The Woman in White so I am looking forward to reading The New Magdalen. I always find it such a shame that books get lost and forgotten so I think it is great of Persephone books to get this book back on the shelves and people reading it again.

Please drop me a comment if you have taken part in Goodreads Monday and I will head over for a visit.

Friday Poetry: Sarah Josepha Hale

Hello!

Happy Friday! I hope everyone has some exciting plans for the weekend.

My chosen poem this week is actually a nursery rhyme written by Sarah Josepha Hale. Hale (1788-1879) was an American writer, activist, and editor.

Mary Had a Little Lamb

Mary had a little lamb,
Its fleece was white as snow,
And everywhere that Mary went
The lamb was sure to go;
He followed her to school one day -
That was against the rule,
It made the children laugh and play
To see a lamb at school.

And so the Teacher turned him out,
But still he lingered near,
And waited patiently about,
Till Mary did appear.
And then he ran to her and laid
His head upon her arm,
As if he said - 'I'm not afraid -
You'll shield me from all harm.'

'What makes the lamb love Mary so,'
The little children cry;
'O, Mary loves the lamb you know,'
The Teacher did reply,
'And you each gentle animal
In confidence may bind,
And make them follow at your call,
If you are always kind.'

This and That Thursday

Hello!

I haven’t done a This and That Thursday recently so I thought I would do one because today I have been on a big adventure.

Between work, reading and chores I have also managed some other activities.

Jigsaws

I have got back into doing jigsaws again recently. I can’t spend a lot of time on them but it is nice to have a challenge to have a go at when I have a few spare minutes. The most recent one I have finished was the Jane Austen jigsaw.

Harry Potter Studio Tour

Today I met up with my best friends and we went to the Harry Potter Studio Tour. This is my fifth visit and I still get so excited to go. I love that each time you go there is something new to see and learn. Today we were showed how some of the tricks were done like the Weasley fire works in The Order of the Phoenix.
