Top 5 Tuesday: Top 5 Books I will Definitely Read this Year

It must be November 2020 since I took part Top 5 Tuesday, so I thought it was high time I took part again.

So here are the 5 books I will definitely read this year.

  1. Thomas Cromwell series by Hilary Mantel
  2. Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier
  3. Tidelands by Philippa Gregory
  4. Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott
  5. Die Standing by John Jackson Miller

I have been desperate to read the Thomas Cromwell series for ages and I hope to read the first one in the series as a buddy read with my best friend. I have never read any Maurier and I think this year I will remedy that as I actually own most of her books. The others have been on my TBR pile for way to long so I will get them read as I plan to work the pile down this year.

I hope everyone is having a good week so far. I am getting rather fed up of my essay and will be pleased when I submit it today. I just want to curl up and read a book!

I am back into reading this after a little break and absolutely loving it. I have ordered the sequel as I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

Really enjoyed this and review will be posted soon. I have also ordered the sequel to this series.

What I think I will Read Next

I really would like to read an Agatha Christie book a month so hopefully I will read this one in January. My other options is one of my Willoughby Book Club books.

Top Ten Tuesday: Resolutions/Hopes for 2021

So here are some of my resolutions and hopes for 2021. The Bookish ones are in bold.

  1. My main hope is to see my family properly because we haven’t been all together for so long due to Covid so this is definitely my main hope as I really do miss everyone.
  2. Another hope is to visit an actual book shop. Due to having underlying health conditions I have to be really careful and so I haven’t gone out anywhere so it would be fantastic to actually browse in a bookshop. My husband might have to restrain me from buying all the books but hopefully I won’t get overwhelmed.
  3. A resolution for 2021 is to finally get our library started and finished. All the books are currently boxed up in a room that we have planned for a library but we do need to do a few jobs to the room to get it ready. I will document the transformation on the blog.
  4. Another resolution is to do more walking this year and beat the amount of miles I walked last year.
  5. Resolution to read more series books this year as I have loads on my TBR pile that I have never started.
  6. Another hope is to visit Bath this year, we always go for New Year but obviously didn’t get a chance this time so really hope we can go this year when it is safer.
  7. This next resolution I am going to put on the blog so I am accountable and it will make me do it as I always put it off each year. The resolution is do my grade 6 piano exam. This really should have been done ages ago but I have been lazy.
  8. Bookish resolution is to read my height in books.
  9. Bookish resolution to read more Agatha Christie books.
  10. Final hope is to have a better 2021 than 2020.

I have been stuck writing an assignment all day and I must admit I will be happy when this essay is done and dusted as writing about ancient Roman funeral rites is getting rather depressing.

Anyway, enough of that, it is time to choose another book off my TBR list. This week I have gone for a book that has been on my TBR list since 2015 but has just recently come back on my radar so I plan on reading it this year all being well.

Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey tells the story behind Highclere Castle, the real-life inspiration and setting for Julian Fellowes’s Emmy Award-winning PBS show Downton Abbey, and the life of one of its most famous inhabitants, Lady Almina, the 5th Countess of Carnarvon. Drawing on a rich store of materials from the archives of Highclere Castle, including diaries, letters, and photographs, the current Lady Carnarvon has written a transporting story of this fabled home on the brink of war.
    Much like her Masterpiece Classic counterpart, Lady Cora Crawley, Lady Almina was the daughter of a wealthy industrialist, Alfred de Rothschild, who married his daughter off at a young age, her dowry serving as the crucial link in the effort to preserve the Earl of Carnarvon’s ancestral home.  Throwing open the doors of Highclere Castle to tend to the wounded of World War I, Lady Almina distinguished herself as a brave and remarkable woman.
    This rich tale contrasts the splendor of Edwardian life in a great house against the backdrop of the First World War and offers an inspiring and revealing picture of the woman at the center of the history of Highclere Castle.

I read Christmas at Highclere by Lady Carnarvon just before Christmas 2020 and absolutely loved the book and really liked Lady Carnarvon’s writing style so I am excited to read this book.

Time for my first Goodreads Monday of 2021. First, I will be honest my TBR pile is huge so it is always a tricky decision which book to choose. I’ve seen some fab reviews of my chosen book so I definitely plan on reading it this year.

Now I will be honest I am not keen on TV programmes or films that do the whole repeating time thing, so I will wait and see whether I will enjoy reading something with the same storyline.

I hope everyone is OK during this limbo period. I must admit I do love the period between Christmas and New Year. The limbo period involves left overs, chocolate, reading, wintry walks and just generally chilling.

What I am Currently Reading

My husband and myself love watching The Expanse so I decided I would read the books in 2021 and have started early. So far I can’t put it down.

What I have Recently Finished Reading

I finished The Nutcracker and have read two of my Christmas presents, Letters from Fairyland and How to See Fairies by Charles Van Sandwyk.

What I Think I will Read Next

I’m starting my buddy read Dissolution on the 1st January, I’m really excited about this book and to be reading it with my best friend. I will probably be reading another book at the same time and it will be one of these books.

I can’t believe tomorrow is Christmas Eve! I have slowed down a little on my reading this week and have only finished the one book, but it was a good book and I have got a load of housework done instead.

What I am Currently Reading

This is my Christmas tradition and I have just started it today. Every year I buy a new edition of The Nutcracker then read it on the last few days of the run up to Christmas. I just love the story and I always enjoy reading a different translator’s take on the story and of course beautiful illustrations.

What I have Recently Finished Reading

Literally finished this, this morning so review will follow shortly. I did really enjoy it though.

What I will Read Next

This will definitely be read on Christmas Eve as it is another Christmas tradition of mine. I had this book for Christmas when I was little and now I read it every Christmas Eve. It doesn’t take long to read but it always makes me think of that magical Christmas morning when I opened this amazing book.

I have so many books on my TBR list but I will try and select ten books that I think I will read over the winter. I like to read a Jane Austen novel over the New Year and into January so that is one easy choice.

Here are my ten books…

  1. Things in Jars by Jess Kidd – This is one of my Willoughby Book Club books that I am very excited to read.
  2. Dissolution by C. J. Sansom – This is my buddy read with my bestie that I will be starting on the 1st of January
  3. The House on Vesper Sands by Paraie O’Donnell – Another Willoughby Book Club read
  4. Ready Player Two by Ernest Cline – My husband is currently reading this so I hope to read it in January once I have finished all my Christmas reading.
  5. Katheryn Howard: The Tainted Queen by Alison Weir – Been on my TBR for way too long and really want to read it soon.
  6. Lady Susan by Jane Austen – I have never actually read this so I think it is high time I sorted it.
  7. Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott, Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis – I just think this will be a good cosy read for the winter.
  8. The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie – The start of reading more Agatha Christie challenge
  9. Olive, Mabel and Me by Andrew Cotter – I can’t wait to read this as I love the videos on youtube.
  10. Star Trek Discovery: Die Standing by John Jackson Miller – Another book that has been sat on my TBR for way too long.

Top Ten Tuesday: The Nutcracker

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is a freebie but with a wintry festive feel. With this in mind I thought I would go for different copies of The Nutcracker by E. T. A. Hoffmann. Every December I read a different version of The Nutcracker. This can be translated by different people or just a different edition but my favourites are always the ones with pretty illustrations or like last year a pop up book!

So here we go…

First up is the one I have ready to read this year, the illustrations look really nice so I am looking forward to reading it.

This was last year’s read and I must admit I got very excited when I discovered it. It is absolutely stunning and I highly recommend it.

This is another beautiful edition but it is big so not easy to read for too long. This was 2018’s Christmas read.

I have the full set of these little Christmas books and I absolutely love them. This one was 2017’s.

Now you might notice this isn’t actually by Hoffmann but it is the story but it is Dumas’ adaptation and this is also the start of my tradition. I bought this when I went to the German Market in Birmingham with my then future husband and we took a trip to Waterstones and I picked this up and then read it through December 2016.

These next ones are future editions that I would one day like to buy and read.

Another Wednesday has arrived and I am definitely in the Christmas reading mode. So here is how my reading is going.

What I am Currently Reading

I’m loving my little poem book. Christmas at Woolworths is rather confusing at the moment because Everest’s writing style is rather all over the place and its all rather hectic trying to work out who said what.

What I have Recently Finished Reading

Loved both of these books and I was really pleased to discover a new author, Sarah Morgan who I will definitely be reading more of. Here are the reviews A Perfect Cornish Christmas and A Wedding in December.

What I think I will Read Next

It will be one of these as it is all Christmas books in December and I have loads of them to read. I just need to make sure I don’t buy anymore!
