Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Love That Were Written Over Ten Years Ago

This is a perfect prompt for me as a lot of books I read and love are nowhere need modern.

So here is what I have come up with:

The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas – This is one of my most loved books, in fact I have read it so many times my copy has fallen into bits so if I drop it and the pages all fall out I have to put them all back in the right order.
Coming Home by Rosamunde Pilcher – This is the first book I read by Pilcher and one of my absolute favourites.
The Nutcracker by E. T. A. Hoffmann – This is my favourite Christmas book and one I read every Christmas without fail.
The Lord of Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien – Yes I know this is three books but they are my all time favourite books.
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy – Another favourite of mine by one of my favourite authors.
Carpe Jugulum by Terry Pratchett – This is the first Discworld novel I ever read and is still my all time favourite, it is probably my all time favourite because it introduced me to the Discworld series.
Do Androids Dreams of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick – Philip K. Dick is another favourite author of mine and I have many favourite books but I have chosen a well known one for this prompt.
Harlequin by Bernard Cornwell – I was only talking about this series to my friend the other day so I decided to include it as it is one of my favourite series.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J. K. Rowling – I bought the 25 years anniversary edition of this book last month. My well read copy is another book that is falling to pieces.
Hood by Stephen R Lawhead – I love this book but I have still yet to read the rest of the trilogy! Must get around to it soon.

This prompt is perfect for me this week because I have been trying to work out what to read this Summer. I am going away in July and I need to decide what to read because I am planning a nice relaxing time with plenty of chilling by the pool but I have no idea!

So here is what I have come up with.

Scenes of Clerical Life by George Eliot – This is my next book to read off my The Classics Club list. Hopefully I will get to it soon.
The Lady Catherine and The Real Downton Abbey by The Countess of Carnarvon – I have been wanting to read this for ages as I just love The Countess of Carnarvon’s writing.
The Witcher: Blood of Elves by Andrzej Sapkowski – I am determined to start this series this year so the Summer seems like a good time as I might have more time.
The Dragon Reborn by Robert Jordan – Next one that I have to read in the series. I won’t finish the series this year but I am determined to make a good push on the series.
Meet Me in Hawaii by Georgia Toffolo – Another book that has been stuck on my TBR for far too long and it looks like a good book to read whilst on holiday.
A Three Dog Problem by S. J. Bennett – I really enjoyed the first book in the series so I am looking forward to this one.
The Night She Disappeared by Lisa Jewell – I bought this on the day it came out and I have still not read it! I must remedy this.
Star Trek Picard: Rogue Elements by John Jackson Miller – I have been reading the Picard and Discovery books because I really enjoy the TV series but I will be honest I am not so keen on Miller as an author. I find he tends to write 300 words when it can be said in 150 words but hopefully this won’t be the case this time.
Nemesis Games by James S. A. Corey – My next book in The Expanse series. I love this series and each book just seems to get better and better.
Olive and Mabel by Andrew Cotter – Another book I bought on the day it came out. I also bought a copy for my niece and she has read and loved it so I really should get reading.

So there is my list. I doubt I will get around to all of the books (the curse of being a mood reader), but I hope to read as many as possible.

I hope this post finds everyone well and having a good week so far.

This weeks Top Ten Tuesday is rather different and it is to celebrate Jana’s birthday. Happy Birthday Jana!

So this week you post ten books that you would love to own and also post your Wishlist in case anybody would like to grant you a wish. I will be going blog hopping today to see if I can grant a few people their bookish wishes.

So here are ten books off my extensive Wishlist.

Meet me in Hawaii by Georgia Toffolo – I went to Hawaii in 2019 and it is honestly the most beautiful place I have ever been to so that is one reason I want to read this book but also because I like the look of the storyline.
The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker – I recently read the next book from this The Women of Troy and really liked what Barker had done with a time old tale so would love to read her first book.
An Old Fashioned Girl by Louisa May Alcott – I simply love Louisa May Alcott and my aim is to read and own all of her books and this one is next on the list.
In Her Shadow by Mark Edwards – New author for me but the storyline sounds fantastic.
After I’ve Gone by Linda Green – I’ve read some of Linda Green’s books in the past and really enjoy her writing.

6. Meditations by Marcus Aurelius – Being a classics student has left me wanting to read loads of classics and this has been on the Wishlist for a while.

7. The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell – I came across this book years ago on a TV programme done by the BBC but sadly I have never got around to reading it.

8. The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje – Another book I have been wanting to read for what seems like forever.

9. Flowers in the Rain and other stories by Rosamunde Pilcher – Pilcher is one of my favourite authors, I just love her writing.

10. Evelina by Frances Burney – This is a bit of a wild card because I can honestly say I do not remember why it is on my Wishlist.

So there are my ten books and here is my Wishlist. Please don’t feel like you have to grant any wishes, I am just glad you stopped by for a read of my post. However, if you do grant a wish I am extremely grateful.

Right I am off to grant a few wishes. I feel like a fairy godmother!

So here are my ten most recent reads. I will include a link to the reviews as well.

I loved the characters in this book but I will be honest I did get a little bored with the story. I will give Osman’s second book a read though when it comes out.

My first Maigret book and the one which got me hooked to the Maigret series.

This is the second book in the Shardlake series and I could not put it down. I loved seeing how Shardlake gathered all the clues and worked out who the suspects were.

My first Tommy and Tuppence book. I enjoyed this but it didn’t have Christie’s usual flare but I suspect that is because it was one of her early books.

The third Expanse book and I must admit they just keep getting better and better.

I will be honest I was rather unimpressed with this book considering all the good reviews I read about it.

Absolutely adored this book. I read it in one sitting. I will definitely be reading more books by Garrett.

I love books that make me laugh out loud so this weeks theme is perfect for me. So here are my ten books.

Caliban’s War by James S. A. Corey

I only finished this book last week and I must admit it made laugh out loud a lot. There are some fantastic one liners in this book.

Skipping Christmas by John Grisham

One of my Christmas reads that I absolutely loved.

The Sea of the Dead by Amy Kuivalainen

Another book with some very amusing scenes and one liners and I can’t wait till book 3 is published.

The Flat Share by Beth O’Leary

My friend introduced me to this book last year and it was a laugh a minute and was a welcome relief from lockdown 1.

Going Postal by Terry Pratchett

I love all the Discworld books but this has to be one of my favourites.

Die Standing by John Jackson Miller

I haven’t actually finished reading this yet, I have 30 pages left but it has been so funny! Georgiou is hilarious and Finnegan is even better.

Leviathan Wakes by James S. A. Corey

This was my first read of 2021 and was another fun read, Amos was definitely the funniest character in this book.

Cat Out of Hell by Lynne Truss

It’s a talking cat, what more do I need to say?

The Martian by Andy Weir

Just like the film this is another very funny read.

Goodbye to All Cats by P. G. Wodehouse

This is only a short little book but it was a very amusing hour long read.

I love discovering new authors so I thought this was a good post for me take part in. So here are my 10 authors that I discovered in 2020.

The Countess of Carnarvon

I read Christmas at Highclere just before Christmas and I loved it and I really enjoyed The Countess of Carnarvon’s writing style and decided that 2021 would be the year I read some more of her books.

Stephen Fry

I have never read any of Stephen Fry’s books before but owned quite a few and I read my first one, Mythos, in 2020 and it will definitely not be my last.

Mike Gayle

I discovered Mike Gayle last year through a book club that was set up through a local bookshop. I quickly read through the book Half a World Away and then promptly read All the Lonely People. I will definitely be reading more of Mike Gayle and highly recommend him.

Madeline Miller

I read The Song of Achilles and it was a true stroke of genius that I adored.

Silvia Moreno-Garcia

I read Mexican Gothic and it really stuck with me. It is one of those stories that you just keep thinking about.

Beth O’Leary

Beth O’Leary’s The Flat Share was recommended to me by my best friend and I laughed my head off whilst reading it and now O’Leary will definitely be an author I turn to again.

Alison Weir

I read my first Alison Weir last year and then read loads of Alison Weir books and bought loads as well. She has become one of my favourite authors.

I only have seven authors that I discovered last year but they were all firm new additions to my TBR.

Top Ten Tuesday: Resolutions/Hopes for 2021

So here are some of my resolutions and hopes for 2021. The Bookish ones are in bold.

My main hope is to see my family properly because we haven’t been all together for so long due to Covid so this is definitely my main hope as I really do miss everyone.
Another hope is to visit an actual book shop. Due to having underlying health conditions I have to be really careful and so I haven’t gone out anywhere so it would be fantastic to actually browse in a bookshop. My husband might have to restrain me from buying all the books but hopefully I won’t get overwhelmed.
A resolution for 2021 is to finally get our library started and finished. All the books are currently boxed up in a room that we have planned for a library but we do need to do a few jobs to the room to get it ready. I will document the transformation on the blog.
Another resolution is to do more walking this year and beat the amount of miles I walked last year.
Resolution to read more series books this year as I have loads on my TBR pile that I have never started.
Another hope is to visit Bath this year, we always go for New Year but obviously didn’t get a chance this time so really hope we can go this year when it is safer.
This next resolution I am going to put on the blog so I am accountable and it will make me do it as I always put it off each year. The resolution is do my grade 6 piano exam. This really should have been done ages ago but I have been lazy.
Bookish resolution is to read my height in books.
Bookish resolution to read more Agatha Christie books.
Final hope is to have a better 2021 than 2020.

I have so many books on my TBR list but I will try and select ten books that I think I will read over the winter. I like to read a Jane Austen novel over the New Year and into January so that is one easy choice.

Things in Jars by Jess Kidd – This is one of my Willoughby Book Club books that I am very excited to read.
Dissolution by C. J. Sansom – This is my buddy read with my bestie that I will be starting on the 1st of January
The House on Vesper Sands by Paraie O’Donnell – Another Willoughby Book Club read
Ready Player Two by Ernest Cline – My husband is currently reading this so I hope to read it in January once I have finished all my Christmas reading.
Katheryn Howard: The Tainted Queen by Alison Weir – Been on my TBR for way too long and really want to read it soon.
Lady Susan by Jane Austen – I have never actually read this so I think it is high time I sorted it.
Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott, Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis – I just think this will be a good cosy read for the winter.
The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie – The start of reading more Agatha Christie challenge
Olive, Mabel and Me by Andrew Cotter – I can’t wait to read this as I love the videos on youtube.
Star Trek Discovery: Die Standing by John Jackson Miller – Another book that has been sat on my TBR for way too long.

Top Ten Tuesday: The Nutcracker

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is a freebie but with a wintry festive feel. With this in mind I thought I would go for different copies of The Nutcracker by E. T. A. Hoffmann. Every December I read a different version of The Nutcracker. This can be translated by different people or just a different edition but my favourites are always the ones with pretty illustrations or like last year a pop up book!

So here we go…

First up is the one I have ready to read this year, the illustrations look really nice so I am looking forward to reading it.

This was last year’s read and I must admit I got very excited when I discovered it. It is absolutely stunning and I highly recommend it.

This is another beautiful edition but it is big so not easy to read for too long. This was 2018’s Christmas read.

I have the full set of these little Christmas books and I absolutely love them. This one was 2017’s.

Now you might notice this isn’t actually by Hoffmann but it is the story but it is Dumas’ adaptation and this is also the start of my tradition. I bought this when I went to the German Market in Birmingham with my then future husband and we took a trip to Waterstones and I picked this up and then read it through December 2016.

These next ones are future editions that I would one day like to buy and read.
