The Weekly Brief

Happy Sunday!

I hope everyone has had a nice weekend. I haven’t managed much reading but I have managed to cook a roast dinner and end up with the meat on the floor so I made up for it by making a cheesecake. I have also done more studying and piano playing.

Anyway, here is what I have been up to on the blog

I’m looking forward to reading these two books and I must admit my Mom has already said she wants to borrow the Richard Osman book off me.

Another blogging week complete.

I hope everyone has a good week.

The Willoughby Book Club #6

Happy Monday!

I hope everyone has a good week planned with some good reading included.

My book from The Willoughby Book Club has arrived and it was in different wrapping! I’m not sure I am as keen on this wrapping as it is more of a sleeve instead of the gorgeous tissue paper but it is the book that counts.

The book I received was Mallory Cook and the Road Not Taken by Charlotte Nash. I know I say this a lot but Charlotte Nash is another new author for me. I do love discovering new authors especially when they become firm favourites, so fingers crossed I am not disappointed.

One single mother. Three escaped pensioners. An unforgettable road trip.

In their tiny, pale green cottage under the trees, Mallory Cook and her five-year-old son, Harry, are a little family unit who weather the storms of life together. Money is tight after Harry’s unreliable and impulsive father, Duncan, abandoned them to expand his business in New York. So when Duncan fails to return Harry after a visit, Mallory sets off, determined to bring her son home any way she can.

A chance encounter with three retirees on the run leaves Mallory leading an unlikely group road trip across the United States. Zadie, Ernie and Jock each have their own reasons for making the journey and along the way the four of them will learn not only the lengths they will travel to save each other, but that it’s never too late to change the path you’re on . . .

Drop me a comment with your thoughts if you have read this book.

Books I’m Excited About #4

Hello!

I have started looking at the books that are being released this year and I must admit there are quite a few I am getting excited about and want to preorder.

So here are a few that I hope to order soon.

As Princesses of Crete and daughters of the fearsome King Minos, Ariadne and her sister Phaedra grow up hearing the hoofbeats and bellows of the Minotaur echo from the Labyrinth beneath the palace. The Minotaur – Minos’s greatest shame and Ariadne’s brother – demands blood every year.

When Theseus, Prince of Athens, arrives in Crete as a sacrifice to the beast, Ariadne falls in love with him. But helping Theseus kill the monster means betraying her family and country, and Ariadne knows only too well that in a world ruled by mercurial gods – drawing their attention can cost you everything.

In a world where women are nothing more than the pawns of powerful men, will Ariadne’s decision to betray Crete for Theseus ensure her happy ending? Or will she find herself sacrificed for her lover’s ambition?

ARIADNE gives a voice to the forgotten women of one of the most famous Greek myths, and speaks to their strength in the face of angry, petulant Gods. Beautifully written and completely immersive, this is an exceptional debut novel.

This book looks really interesting and I can’t wait for it to be published. I do love a retelling of an ancient myth.

Addie and her sister are about to embark on an epic road trip to a friend’s wedding in rural Scotland. The playlist is all planned and the snacks are packed.

But, not long after setting off, a car slams into the back of theirs. The driver is none other than Addie’s ex, Dylan, who she’s avoided since their traumatic break-up two years earlier.

Dylan and his best mate are heading to the wedding too, and they’ve totalled their car, so Addie has no choice but to offer them a ride. The car is soon jam-packed full of luggage and secrets, and with four hundred miles ahead of them, Dylan and Addie can’t avoid confronting the very messy history of their relationship…

Will they make it to the wedding on time? And, more importantly… is this really the end of the road for Addie and Dylan?

I read The Flat Share by O’Leary last year and absolutely loved it so I am looking forward to reading her latest book.

The Night Hawks, a group of metal detectorists, are searching for buried treasure when they find a body on the beach in North Norfolk. At first Nelson thinks that the dead man might be an asylum seeker but he turns out to be a local boy, Jem Taylor, recently released from prison. Ruth is more interested in the treasure, a hoard of Bronze Age weapons. Nelson at first thinks that Taylor’s death is accidental drowning, but a second death suggests murder.

Nelson is called to an apparent murder-suicide of a couple at the isolated Black Dog Farm. Local legend talks of the Black Shuck, a spectral hound that appears to people before they die. Nelson ignores this, even when the owner’s suicide note includes the line, ‘He’s buried in the garden.’ Ruth excavates and finds the body of a giant dog.

All roads lead back to this farm in the middle of nowhere, but the place spells serious danger for anyone who goes near. Ruth doesn’t scare easily. Not until she finds herself at Black Dog Farm …

This has been published but I haven’t ordered it yet but I will be honest I won’t be able to hold out for much longer as I love the Dr Ruth Galloway series.

Just three books at the moment but I will be ordering them soon I hope. I always enjoy preordering books as then I generally forget about the order and then when it arrives in the post it proves a nice surprise.

Please drop me a comment with any books you are excited about.

The Willoughby Book Club #5

Happy Saturday!

I do love it when I get a surprise book in the post and today was the day I have been eagerly awaiting since the beginning of the month.

My book was sadly not in its usual gorgeous wrapping due to staff shortages in the company but I got something even better included with my book, a little notebook to write all of my bookish notes in. I do love notebooks, so this was right up my street.

The book that I received was Meet Me In Bombay by Jenny Ashcroft. Jenny Ashcroft is another new author to me but her books have been recommended to me more than once by various people so I am looking forward to reading it.

The voucher code for 10% off a Willoughby Book Club subscription is still valid until the 25th February 2021 if you wish to join this fantastic club and get fabulous books through the post, then click the link below.
